PROCESS
The project was primarily driven from extensive survey of the literature on co-creation,
mass-customization, and open innovation. Design decisions were analyzed within the
multidisciplinary perspectives from the fields of industrial design and cognitive
ergonomics. Manufacturing, inventory, and marketing constraints were also considered.
Specific interface features are driven from the literature search on cognitive ergonomics
and industrial design. Comparative evaluation with successful industries was performed to
gauge the strengths and limitations of the concept. Brainstorming, ideation, sketching, and
visual design was performed thereafter.
Key UI Features
- Recommendation of base model over and above which user preferences are drawn
- Complete elicitation of users’ preferences including design, color, dimensions, and
key features
- Support for both goal-oriented and experiential shopping experience (actual vs.
window-shopping analogy)
- Support for unlimited design iterations
- Design materials and tools are presented to support attribute-based interaction
rather than alternative-based
- Status area, next to canvas, displays user selections, and supports interactive
recommendations

DESIGN CHALLENGE
This project is premised on the novel concepts of co-creation and
mass-customization, which propose the co-creation of value by the firm and
customers, rather than entirely by the firm. The challenge was to propose a proof
of concept through the design of web interface that will allow users to customize
the features of a mobile phone. The end goal was to propose improvements in
the industrial design process by involving end users in the design process.
